Postdoctoral Fellows in Vascular Medicine
Centre for Vascular Research

Faculty of Medicine
University of Sydney
Ref: 96849

The Centre for Vascular Research (CVR), with laboratories at four Australian universities, was formed in 1992 and has a strong and proven commitment to research encompassing studies on the function of vascular cells in normal and pathologic processes. With the opening of the University of Sydney node of CVR, applications are invited from dedicated research scientists, for three positions. Applicants will be required to work in a team of about fifteen scientists - led by Professor Roland Stocker - conducting research into different factors related to atherosclerosis.

The primary responsibility of all applicants will be to design, perform and implement research. Candidates will also develop and validate new techniques, assist other members of the laboratory, analyse and interpret data and prepare initial drafts of manuscripts, abstracts, posters and grant applications.

Position one
will investigate how a new class of agents exerts anti-inflammatory activities at the level of extravasation and activation of inflammatory cells. A proven track record in inflammation-related research is mandatory.
Position two will investigate how a new class of agents induces heme oxgenase-1 in vascular cells and how this impacts on cell function. The applicant will require demonstrated experience in molecular cell biology related to cell signaling.
Position three will examine how a new class of agents alters endothelial cell function that translates into promotion of re-endothelialization and enhanced NO-medicated function in vivo. Experience in endothelial cell molecular biology is essential. Relevant scientific background information can be found in J Exp Med 2006;203:1117.

All roles require a PhD Medical Science, Biological Science or related discipline, and proven experience and expertise in molecular cell biology. A good publication record, technical expertise, the ability to present results at national and international scientific meetings, and the capacity to supervise and instruct junior laboratory staff, will be highly advantageous.

Applications from junior and senior fellows will be considered, with primary emphasis being placed on the overall quality of the candidate. All positions require excellent oral and written communications skills, good computing skills and a team ethic. They also require knowledge of EEO/AA principles, and OHS responsibilities, and a commitment to attending relevant OHS training. The successful candidate may be required to undertake a criminal record check.

This is a unique opportunity to work with a large group of researchers. It is a relatively advanced project with a very high probability of resulting in a commercial application and a positive impact on a disease that is the major killer of Australians. Applicants will also be in a position to extend their publication history and possibly take on a research leadership position in the future.

These positions are fixed term to 31 December 2007, with the intention of extending to a medium-term appointment, subject to satisfactory performance. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
Remuneration package: $72,326.80 - $77,637.97 (which includes a base salary Level A $61,117 - $65,605 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation)
Remuneration package: $81,729 - $97,053.09 p.a. (which includes a base salary Lecturer Level B $69,062 - $82,011 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation)
