funding

CVR members are highly successful in attracting funding from a variety of sources. Examples of major CVR funding sources are given below. Specific information regarding funding of individual projects is available within the Research Groups and Commercial pages.

Institutional Funding Support

Institutional funding support has been largely from Eastpath, lately SEALS with an annual expenditure budget of $170,000. The UNSW Research Infrastructure schemes have provided approximately $110,000 - $120,000 p.a. in recent years. The Centre has shared in major equipment funding from UNSW. Since 1996 the Centre has been a recipient of NSW Department of Health Research & Development Infrastructure funding, initially $366,000 p.a. increasing to $645,000 p.a. in 2000/2001.

External Funding Support

The CVR salary component has been almost entirely dependent on external funding, the bulk of which is from competitive, peer reviewed research grants and the NHMRC Fellowship Scheme. Since 1994, the core has been in the form of a NHMRC Program Grant, which has been renewed in 1998 and in 2002. In 2003, an additional NHMRC Program Grant, awarded in 2002, has boosted the peer reviewed income by $0.79m per annum. Regular income has been received through the National Heart Foundation of Australia and the NSW Cancer Council. Commercial funding has been through partnership with several organisations with details available in Commercial pages.

NSW Cancer Council Program Grant 2000 - 2005

An application to the NSW Cancer Council for 5 year funding to investigate tumour angiogenesis is a joint program based on work in the CVR and in laboratories in the John Curtin School of Medical Research and the ANU. $1,000,000 over five years was awarded to the program, a step in a growing collaboration with Professor Christopher Parish and his colleagues in the JCSMR.

NHMRC Program Grant 2002 - 2006

In 2001, one of the Centre's NHMRC Program Grants reached its penultimate year. A renewal was submitted which formalised already existing collaborations with Michael Berndt and Robert Andrews (Dept of Biochemistry, Monash University) and Christopher Parish and Mark Hulett (John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU). The application was successful, the award totalling $10,000,000 over 5 years to the Program which is entitled 'Vascular Biology'.

NHMRC Program Grant 2003 - 2007

During 2002, Roland Stocker and Wendy Jessup as Chief Investigators and Len Kritharides as Principal Investigator were successful in their application for a new NHMRC Program Grant, 'Atherosclerosis' being awarded $7.125m over 5 years. This Program is also a collaboration with units outside UNSW; David Celermajer, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital/Sydney University and Philip Barter and Kerrie-Anne Rye, Heart Research Institute, Sydney.
